Link to a website on Cranial Stenosis - note that these are cases that needed surgery not all stenosis needs surgery https://www.drderderian.com/craniosynostosis

Also on that site if you look at this page https://www.drderderian.com/positional-plagiocephaly you will see this surgeon expanation of the difference between positional plagiocephaly and stenosis. Also of note on that page is his discussion on helmets including

"In most case of positional plagiocephaly no treatment is required to achieve a normal head shape, because the skull will even out over time. Often times I will recommend placing a rolled blanket or towel under the back on the side of flatness to encourage the baby to rest on the other side of the head. "

Occasionally, there may be more significant flatness that requires additional help in growing back into a more even head shape. In these circumstances a molding helmet is prescribed. This helmet does not apply pressure to the head. The molding helmet sits up against the areas of prominence and leaves space for the areas that are flat to grow into. Thus, the helmet is shaping growth of the skull in a more directed fashion.

The earlier the helmet is applied, the more effective it will be. The latest that I prescribe a helmet is about 6 months of age, because the skull bones are starting to harden beyond this age which limits the amount of change obtained from a molding helmet. "

Using masks

For those of you who have to use masks when treating here's a short video from Joanne with some excellent ways to make baby feel comfortable with the situation.

Pediatric Apprenticeship 2022

Zoom 3 will be on Wednesday 18th May at 7pm then Zoom 4 three weeks later on Wed 8th June. Before our next zoom on the 18th please complete all of main section of the Core Syllabus. That way by the next zoom you will have completed:

  • Getting Started Treating Babies
  • Baby Health Check & Stretch Course
  • Babies Core Syllabus

Although for now skip the last module of the Core Syllabus - Extended Learning.

The intention here is for you to have completed enough of the course material to be able to be feel confident to be able to apply this 'in the field' and to get more "hands on" practical experience working with the babies.

Joanne will be in contact with those of you not yet getting hands on with babies to chat a bit more about that, but for those of you in that situation, thats ok, this is all recorded so if you only get hands on a bit down the line thats also fine.

The intention with Zooms 3 and 4 is to start digging into the experience that you are having when you are working with babies the successes and of course the not so successes (remember there are no failures when working with babies).

Taking Yoda's  "Do or do not. There is no try"

with babies we can say that

"We are working with babies or we are not"

There is no 'trying' to work with them, no trying and failing - if you have hands on a baby you are being of benefit to baby - even if you dont think so and even if you cant feel anything in your hands! The hands know even if the brain can sometimes take a long time to catch up and register whats going on.

In life Understanding rarely precedes the Experience, it's usually Experinece first Understanding Later, this is very true when working with babies.

So get out there and 'do your thing" and in the next couple of zooms we can cover some of the experiences that you will have. Please do make a record of what happening with your treatments  and your progress, this will help accelarate your skill level and can become a type of journal for you and anything you want clarification on please email us and we will cover it in the next couple of zooms.

Also in the next zoom I will cover some peadiatric anatomy, but I will keep it snappy and very relevant and not make it theoretical and I will do it so I keep you awake!

all the best - J x
